I created The Desk Out There because I wanted a place to document what happens when you stop saying “someday” and actually try something different.
I’m 53, I work in the corporate world, and I’m lucky enough to have a job that gives me the flexibility to work remotely. Somewhere along the way, I started asking myself a pretty simple question: if I can work from anywhere, why does my desk have to stay at home?
A motorcycle accident changed the way I think about time and how quickly life can change. It led to a knee replacement and some ongoing issues with my leg, which made some of the hiking and backpacking I love more difficult. It also made me realize that waiting for the “right time” can turn into waiting forever.
So I bought an RV, packed up way too much gear, and decided to find out whether working from the road is actually something I’ll enjoy or whether this turns out to be one very expensive midlife crisis.
This blog is where I’m going to document that honestly — the places, the workdays, the great moments, the mistakes, the frustrations, and whatever else happens along the way.
I have no idea exactly where this will go.
That’s kind of the point.
